Originally a division of Memphis-based food wholesaler Malone & Hyde, the company was known as Auto Shack. Following the sale of the grocery store to Fleming Companies of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the company`s name was changed to AutoZone to reflect the new purpose and settle a lawsuit by Tandy Corporation for infringement of Tandy`s «Radio Shack» trademark.  In 2007, Bill Rhodes, then 42, was appointed Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of AutoZone, Inc. on June 6.  On July 4, 1979, the first store opened in Forrest City, Arkansas, under the name Auto Shack. In June 2019, AutoZone reached an $11 million settlement with the State of California to clarify allegations that the company violated state laws governing hazardous waste, hazardous materials, and sensitive consumer information. AutoZone is accused of illegally disposing of millions of hazardous wastes, including used engine oil and automotive fluids, in landfills that are not allowed to accept hazardous waste.  In 1987, Auto Shack officially changed its name to AutoZone.  The first AutoZone store was located in Enid, Oklahoma. This year, the company also introduced WITT-JR, an electronic catalog used to search for parts and store warranty information.
The total number of stores is now 459 in 16 states. In June 1988, the company launched its own range of automotive products developed by its product managers under the trade name ADuralast. September 2001, page 34 The names Valucraft, Duralast and Duralast Gold are also used for various other parts and accessories. In 2005, William C. Rhodes III was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer. Steve Odland left the company to become President and CEO of Office Depot.  On July 4, 1979, the first store opened in Forrest City, Arkansas.  Doc Crain was the first store manager. The income on that first day was $300.00.
 2018 – The tenth AutoZone United States distribution center opens in Ocala, Florida. The company`s founder, Pitt Hyde, retired as president and CEO in 1997.  John Adams became the new President and CEO. In 1986, the company`s expansion developed into a large chain of stores in the South and Midwest. In 1994, AutoZone began using satellites to facilitate communication between stores and headquarters. Revenues reached $1.5 billion. In 1998, AutoZone acquired Auto Palace, an auto parts chain in the northeastern United States with 112 stores, TruckPro L.P., a chain with 43 stores in 14 states, and Chief Auto Parts Inc., a chain of 560 stores with operations in 5 states.   In early 1999, AutoZone made another acquisition by acquiring 100 Express stores from The Pep Boys – Manny, Moe & Jack.  The company began an internationalization process with its first overseas company, which was opened in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.  AutoZone closed the 1990s with a Fortune 500 debut in 1999. A satellite system introduced in 1994 allowed store employees to set goods aside in a nearby store to ensure customers could buy the parts they needed, even if they were out of stock in a particular store.
Auto-Zone began adding more accessories such as sunglasses and floor mats and seat covers to its stores in 2001. As of April 2017, AutoZone has been the largest auto parts retailer in North America for three consecutive years. As of August 2017, AutoZone had 5,465 locations in the United States, 524 in Mexico and 14 in Brazil, for a total of 6,003.  2007 – The 4,000th AutoZone store in the United States opens in Houston, Texas. 2004 – AutoZone celebrates its 25th anniversary as a company that WOW! In September 1992, KKR announced that it would sell an additional 2.3 million shares of AutoZone to the public in order to increase the company`s financial liquidity and reduce price fluctuations for its shares. On December 15, 2011, ALLDATA LLC, a business unit of AutoZone, expanded its direct presence in Canada to better serve its growing customer base.   1995 – AutoZone introduces our Duralast and Duralast Gold batteries. AutoZone paid $3.3 million to settle a lawsuit against the families of a family killed because they were turned away by a truck owned by AutoZone. The lawsuit alleges that AutoZone acted negligently in training the driver of the truck.
 In 2003, the Duralast tool range was introduced. This has been a year of significant negotiations for AutoZone, as the company has partnered with other major companies in the auto parts industry such as CarMax and Midas. AutoZone de Mexico opens the first DC in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.
